Clients have upper back and neck pain as more than 80% of what I’ve seen in my lifetime as a therapist. Most of that comes from a slouch and thoracic kyphosis that while not skeletal is most certainly muscular. Everything in our daily life pulls us forward and down. Walking upright we made evolutionary tradeoffs and this is one of those instances where we can think outside the box and unwind our position using gravity to help instead of hinder.

Side lying is your friend.

You can do this in a short form or long form. This single class doesn’t even cover all the potential possibilities but it does give you a solid starting point. It’s imperative that you give and receive to learn.

When putting the client over your feet:

  • Make sure to feel comfortable in your legs and feet
  • Use bolsters to position the client for mutual ease and relaxation
  • Feel free to communicate verbally, this is new to both you and the client
  • Don’t strain and give yourself time for conditioning. Practice!
